Technological development cannot be seen outside the context of sustainable development. The goal of sustainable development is to “meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Yet in this era of unprecedented economic growth, achieving this goal can seem more of an aspiration than a reality. Socially responsible behaviour, strongly supported by the principles of sustainable development, is becoming increasingly important. Research indicates that the application of the paradigm of socially responsible conduct contributes to the improved company image and performance. In the modern business system, sustainable development therefore becomes not just a matter of prestige, but a business imperative with significant implications for profitability in the long-term. As a consequence of this, a growing number of companies disclose their information in areas of activity focused on socially responsible behavior. This information is disclosed in a Sustainability Report, which follows the binding financial statements, or it is included in Annual Report. A sustainability report should provide a balanced and reasonable representation of the sustainability performance of a reporting organization – including both positive and negative contributions. The aim of this paper is to present, to what extent and how blue chip companies in Serbia reveal information relating to sustainable development and to examine the association of certain companies with characteristics and comprehensiveness of reporting on sustainable development.
