International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights - protection of workers' rights

Abstract

The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has been adopted and open to signature, ratification and accession by General Assembly resolution 2200A (XXI) of 16 December 1966. It entered into force on 3 January 1976 in accordance with Article 27. In the third part Article 6 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights explicitly states that all: 1) States Parties to the present Covenant "recognize the right to work, which includes the right of every person to the possibility of earning through freely chosen or accepted work, and take appropriate measures to preserve this right". 2) Among the measures that each member state of this pact should undertake to achieve this right in full include technical and vocational guidance programs and training, policies and methods for achieving permanent economic, social and cultural development and full productive employment in conditions that guarantee the enjoyment of human beings the basis of political and economic freedoms.
