Abstract

The application of the concept of development banking represents a proactive approach to managing socio-economic priorities within national, subnational and supranational frameworks. Many of the today’s leading economies owe their development to these financial institutions and the efficiency they show in the allocation of capital resources towards projects with a development component. Thus, they have become an inevitable factor in the functioning of the financial systems as a whole. The Republic of Srpska Investment-Development Bank has been established by the Republic of Srpska, committing itself to institutional centralization and professionalization of “asset management at the level of the Republic of Srpska with the aim of providing support to development and investment projects.“ The bank started its financial operations in April 2008 and since then it has occupied a significant position in the domestic financial system. This paper aims at referring to the key determinants of the IRBRS’s activity following decades of experience, including an overview of the broader context in which the activity has taken place as well as the importance that the Bank has had for the financial and real flows in the Republic of Srpska. Following an argumentative and factbased discussion, in the concluding remarks we present some of our views on the future prospects of development banking, without limiting the applicability of the proposed measures primarily to domestic social and economic circumstances.
